Darjeeling Government College, as it stands today since 5th August, 1948, has traversed a long way in serving the community.The college offers Arts,science and commerce courses for the students.A total of 16 subjects are being taught in this institution out of which History is one . The Department of History started its journey from the year 1950.Its main purpose was to educate the young inquisitive mind of the Hills.The department started its Honours course with fifteen students and the number gradually increased.Today the Department of History can boast of approximately 230 students in Honours and more than 700 students in general course.It has a rich Seminar library with approximately 2500 books and a central library as well.Both the libraries are accessible to the students.Many erudite minds have been enlightening the students on History since 1950.The Department today has five faculty members-Mrs Roshni Pradhan(Head of the Department),Mrs Sudha Lama,,Mr Dipankar Sarkar , Dr Arun Ghosh and Ms Sanjogta Bomzan .The faculty apart from their departmental work even serves in different sub committees of the college,and is also voluntarily taking PG classes at the Darjeeling Hill University(Mungpoo). Dr Ashok kr mandal ,a transferred faculty of History undertook a minor research project during his stint in the History Department.For the clarity of understanding challenging topics ,the department has organised lectures inviting Resource person from North Bengal University. Like the teachers ,the students too,apart from their academics, involve themselves in different co-curricular activities of the college like NSS and NCC etc .Within a period of 75 years the History Department has succeeded in engendering some brilliant minds who have been very successful and an asset to the society.
