Department of Geography, Darjeeling Government College started its journey in the academic year 1979. Dr. Anis Chatterjee joined as the founder Head and run the department from room No: 67. For the first time 9 students of Geography were admitted in class 11 under science stream and subsequently Undergraduate Honours course & General Course (2+1) in Geography under University of North Bengal started from year 1981 when those admitted class 11 students passed their Higher Secondary Exam. In 1980 Department was shifted in the present location by culminating number of challenges for arranging and maintaining the educational resources. The department has started CBCS course (1+1+1 System) in undergraduate level following UGC guidelines through University of North Bengal in the year 2017. Subsequently from academic session 2023-24 Four Year Undergraduate Programme (FYUGP) in undergraduate course with single major under the new curriculum and credit framework of University of North Bengal were implemented vide NEP 2020. Currently, the teaching faculties comprises 1 Associate Professor, 5 Assistant Professors, 2 SACT-II and 2 non-teaching staff with more than 250 students (including both Hons & General).
