The Department of Bengali was created in the year 1948, very beginning with the college. From the very outset Bengali was one of the Compulsory subjects for the Arts students from plains. Currently, the department conducts a four-year graduate level major course in Bengali. Apart from that the department conducts minor course for the other major course students of arts and AECC course for the other science and arts stream students.
Though the department has a major crisis of scarcity of students from its beginning, but it inherits a rich past, mostly for the eminent faculties who served here. Eminent Scholars like Sri Sabyasachi Deb (Poet), Professor Sangeeta Mitra Tripathy (Essayist), Professor Sanat Kumar Naskar (Essayist), Sri Koushik Ray Choudhury (Theatre artist and critic), Sri Sumanta Mukhopadhyay (Poet and Essayist) etc. served the department in recent past.
