Darjeeling Government College was established on 5th of August 1948.
The department boasts of its proud history synonymous to the College history. The initiation was done with the I.A. and I.Sc. courses. From the 1970s the Dept. of Nepali was fully established in the college with Nepali Elective and Nepali honors classes. Since the establishment of the college, the Professor in charge of the Department was T.B. Singh. He was the honored Founder, Head of the Department and also the first Professor to teach in the Department. During 1951 and 1954 the task of the HOD and Professorial responsibilities was handled by Suryabikram Gyawali. Thereafter Ishwar Baral handled the duties of teaching in the College until the year 1954. In the same year (1954) the post of the HOD was again assumed by Prof. Tulsi Bahadur Chettri. During his tenure The North Bengal University recommended the official establishment of the Department of Nepali in 1969-70. From 1970-71 onwards the Department officially initiated formal honors classes within the College Campus. When the Department was formally inaugurated the Department had only two Professors, Prof. Tulsibahadur Chettri and Babulal Pradhan. On the 16th of September 1970 Prem Dorjee Bhutia was appointed as an Ad Hoc teacher. On 6th Dec 1971 through Public Service Commission Lucky Devi Sundas was first appointed as a Lecturer and she went on to serve her post until 1994 as the Lecturer and the Head of the Department. As a feather on the cap of the department, the Post Graduate Department of Nepali was started on the 5th of April 2002.
Currently the Department of Nepali is responsible for educating the students of Honors, Elective Nepali courses and also the additional Compulsory languages to the students of Science and Commerce categories on the basis of CBCS curriculum. In the present we are proud to announce that the students who have passed out from the department have gone on to become reputable Professors in various Colleges and Universities and they have also succeeded to branch out in other such reputable professions as such. Currently the Nepali Department hosts 6 full time Professors who are as follows:
