The historic P.G. Department of Botany initiated in the year 1962. Since then the Department has gradually flourished into a centre of excellence for budding students and researchers under the supervision of different eminent and legendary personalities in the field of Plant Science. Numerous initial W.B.E.S. recruits have their first posting at Darjeeling Government College and the Department is a witness of their gradual development to ornamented academicians in due course being transferred to Governmental positions of utmost importance or to various scientific and teaching posts in different Universities across West Bengal and India. The Department boasts of an extremely successful alumni serving as human resources in various fields and sectors. There are a huge number of CSIR-UGC NET, SET, GATE, ICAR, WBCS, WBES, WBFS, SSC and IFS qualified students shining in their respective arenas. The Department has various infrastructural facilities with classrooms, equipped laboratories and scientific instruments employed in regular academic and research activities by students and teachers. Currently, there are 9 (Nine) nos. of permanent Assistant Professors under W.B.E.S. and 6 (Six) nos. of SACT professionals catering to the needs of students with more than cumulative 125+ U.G. & P.G. students. New NEP & CBCS based curriculum have been implemented with 7 (Seven) special papers options being offered to the M.Sc. students namely Cytogenetics, Microbiology, Mycology & Plant Pathology, Plant Physiology & Biochemistry, Plant Biochemistry & Molecular Biology, Taxonomy of Angiosperms and Ecology and Phycology. The dedicated attitude of teachers and scholastic students indicate a vibrant future of the Department of Botany.
